In the United States, a medical examiner is a medical doctor. As previously mentioned, they are pathologists. Now, this doesn't exactly mean you HAVE TO be specialized in Pathology, but it is preferred as you would realistically be trained in the aspects of investigations. If you would like to have a character who was a Neurosurgeon for example, but RP that had been involved in a terrible car accident and cannot operate on live tissue anymore, so they join DMEC as a Medical Examiner, of course, you can. The main thing is that your education just like your character's background makes sense.
