As our very first press release to the public. This press release will explain and focus on the duties and overall management of the Coroners and the Medical Examiners at the department. The responsibilities of the Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner are complex. By state law it is the responsibility of the department to inquire into and determine the circumstances, manner and cause of deaths which fall within its jurisdiction. These deaths include any suspected homicide, suicide, or accidental deaths. These also include any natural death. Additionally, other certain causes of deaths are also mandated to be investigated by the coroner.
The department’s Medical Examiners are doctors specifically trained in forensic pathology. Evidence that are collected during autopsies and at the scene of death can be used for criminal prosecution as well as determining the cause of death. They are frequently called to court in order to testify as to the results of these examinations.
Medical Examiners/Investigators conduct autopsies, collecting evidence, and conducting toxicology testing. Aside from this they will conduct their own investigations to find the next of kin of the decedent and provide closure to them. To do this they obtain information from family, friends, and public safety personnel regarding the terminal episode.
